Steve,
Thanks for the heads up with the rattlesnake. Did you find the problem with the buddy box? There's a slim chance of getting my student off tomorrow assuming he's back from vacation and is ready to go. Thought I'd ask just to check it out.
I put a Perry pump on the Moki 1.8 in the new Goldberg Extra and took it to the field last night (Friday) at 7:30. Took me about an hour to get the engine carburetion tweaked back in as I had to adjust the pump pressure several times to get it where it would richen out at the high end. Figured I had it pretty close. It was 8:30 and getting dim out there with the cloud cover and sunset but I figured I had time for one quick checkout flight. Well in short it was one hairy experience.
After several stall turns to check the vertical, I decided to land. Made the normal landing approach from right to left with the south breeze. But the engine wouldn't slow down enough to land. Circled around reducing the throttle trim trying to get the engine to idle. No go. Tried to accelerate and no go there either. Throttle control seemed stuck at a fast idle of about a quarter throttle. What to do now! Only thing I could do was circle the field to run the engine out of fuel. Made what had to be 20 landing approaches and finally the engine idled down and made a routine landing even though it still had some fuel. After about 10 minutes until my knees and hands stopped shaking a little, pulled off the canopy just to check the throttle servo. Wa, la, goldmine. The #@#$@#$@#$ top of the servo tray holding the servo hadn't been glued in properly so the servo and tray wasn't anchored to anything solid. The servo and piece of the tray it was screwed to was free floating. Whew, no wonder!!!!!! Packed up and went home which by now was dark thirty and still shaking and cussing under my breath. Told the story to wifey-pooh and she immediately fixed me a shot of "After Shock" on the rocks. Really needed that so I could relax and go to sleep in less than two hours of calm down time.
Hmmm just another "routine" adventure at the flying field. @#?#%$^#@#$$%, curses, foiled again.
